We introduce a design strategy, the foreign presence, which combines work in Human Computer Interaction, Artificial Intelligence, and media art to create experiences that involve reflection on the enchanting and the contemplation of daily activities. A foreign presence plays an active and characterizes the daily activity and reflects back on generative environment that appears to avoid a simple-to-one mapping between sensed data and output. We describe the presence of alien design strategy for achieving spell, and to report on Tableau Machine, a concrete example of a project alien presence for domestic spaces. We report on a formative evaluation indicates that encouraging that Tableau Machine actually support reflection and is actively involved users in the co-construction of meaning around the display
